Crab Feed 2008

Robert Blecha’s  bass playing career began when his dad gave him an electric bass for his 15th birthday, along with a coupon for four bass lessons. When Robert returned from his first lesson, his father asked, "So, what did you learn?"

"Well, I learned the first five notes on the E string."  The next week, after the second lesson, his dad again asked about the progress, and Robert replied, "This time I learned the first five notes on the A string."

One week later, Robert came home far later than expected, smelling of cigarettes and beer.  His father asked: "Hey, what happened in today's lesson?"   Robert replied "Dad, I'm sorry I couldn't make it to my lesson; I had a gig!"

That’s the way it started many years ago.  Since then Robert has kicked the cigarette habit and played many venues all over the Golden State.  In Southern California he played bass for bands “The Withdrawal” and “The Green Natives”.  While still in his formative O.C. years his low-end rumble graced both the “Whiskey a-go-go” and “The Roxy” in Hollywood.

After relocating to Northern California in 1991 he happened upon an ad for a bass player in the now defunct local music magazine “BAM”.  After calling SOUNDCHECK and assuring them he was able to play the songs “just like the record” an audition was scheduled.  After playing long into the night, the boys had no other choice but to bring Robert into the band.
